A New Journey Begins With the First Step!

Dear Reader,

Welcome to Expedition Midlife!

I’ve been wanting to create this blog for a while but the problem is, how do you write a blog when you don’t think of yourself as a writer? Please bear with me as I work my way through this new journey.

I get really excited when I think about this website and all it’s potential, but that’s when my brain locks up and the thoughts overwhelm me. I am literally that deer caught in the headlights, unsure which direction to go because I want to go in all of them! So what exactly is this journey?

It all started last year when Anne asked if I wanted to go on a hike to see a waterfall. “Sure!” I replied. I’d been on plenty of hikes before but not to see a waterfall, so I figured it would be fun and different. She had always been a hiker and wanted to do the ADK Fifty Falls Challenge,  but her family wasn’t really interested.  Since she didn’t want to hike alone, I agreed to join her on her mission. We had a great time together, just the two of us and her dog Floki. We finished the challenge in about six months, spending the summer and part of the fall traipsing all over the beautiful Adirondacks seeing these amazing waterfalls.

Shortly after accomplishing this goal and receiving our patches, Anne texted me a picture of 3 new books- more waterfall challenges, all over the state. I texted back “you’re killing me, haha, but I’m totally onboard “.

And so it began…..

What started out as me just going along for the ride has now become a successful hiking partnership. Anne is a planner and enjoys spending hours, days, months researching and planning our expeditions. It’s her current obsession. Sometimes her goals exceed what is realistic for a day. That’s where I come in. I can fine tune the plans to keep Anne grounded in reality, and sometimes on the trail. (She readily admits that I keep her from getting into trouble.)

We’ve completed several challenges since our start and hiked hundreds and hundreds of miles together. Somebody told us “You should really share this experience in a blog”. So that’s what we’re going to do!

Maybe you’re asking “what’s this blog going to encompass?”  Our plan is to tell you about our hikes in the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains of New York.  Our goal is to inspire you. We are both (by definition only!) “middle aged”.  We’ve had careers, we’ve raised our children and now we’re ready for the next step in our life journeys.  We know we’re not alone in the challenge of figuring out what that next step is,  so we’re giving this blog idea a shot.  Hopefully,  it will resonate with you in your own midlife journey, so you too, can hit the trails and try something new.

This is the time… you’ve “been there, done that” but want to do so much more.

THIS is Expedition Midlife.  Join us!
