Mountains, Ponds and Brooks – A Visual Trifecta in the Adirondacks

May 3, 2022

Today Anne and I headed up to the Siamese Ponds Wilderness area. This area has so much to offer for whatever your outdoor hobby may be- camping, hiking, fishing, kayaking. You can easily make a weekend of it as there are campsites scattered along Thirteenth Lake (first come first serve) and plenty of trails to hike. Our goal today was to hike the Peaked Mountain Pond trail up to Peaked Mountain.

Our first stop along the trail was Thirteenth Lake ( part of the ADK Lakes and Ponds Challenge), which you can see from the parking lot, it’s that close. About 1/2-3/4 mile in you have some options of where to continue on: Hour Pond, Putter Pond Trail, or Peaked Mountain Pond. We continued on the Peaked Mountain Pond trail to head up to Peaked Mountain (part of the ADK 29 Challenge).

Along the way to Peaked Mountain Pond there’s a brook running along the trail that sounds as lovely as it looks. The small waterfalls are a visual added bonus. The trail conditions to the pond were muddy, as expected this time of year, but not difficult. We took a break at the pond before heading up to Peaked Mountain.

The ascent up the mountain is very steep and slippery at times. There is one section of serious rock scramble to be aware of. It was an unexpected challenge (especially with Floki) but manageable and once you reach the top the views are worth it!

The descent was much quicker and so we stopped along the brook to spend more time enjoying the beauty and peaceful sounds of the flowing water.

This was a great location and we’ll be looking to return to get to Hour Pond (for the ADK Lakes and Ponds Challenge) and maybe spend a weekend enjoying the primitive camping and kayaking at Thirteenth Lake.
