5th January, 2021
It was a great day for “waterfalling”! Even though the day was overcast, as we made our way north there was gently falling snow. Knowing we were going to be out all day I pretty much packed for everything, from snowshoes to extra boots, cause ya never know what can happen in the Adirondacks!
Death Brook Falls (aka Secret Falls) in Raquette Lake, NY.
Even though it’s a very short walk, the trail is so serene. Regular hiking boots were fine on this trail as it was already broken. There was about an inch of freshly fallen snow on the trail but it wasn’t slippery. We even walked to the bottom of the falls as it was frozen enough even with water running underneath.
Buttermilk Fall in Long Lake, NY.
This was another short walk with a number of different paths to view the falls. Just like the path at Death Brook Falls, it was already broken with just an inch or so of fresh snow on top. The water was powerfully rushing and loud!
OK Slip Falls in Indian Lake, NY.
This has become a new favorite of mine! The hike is over 6 miles round trip so I opted to put on my winter boots, as my regular hiking boots were not going to keep my feet warm. I also put on my micro spikes which turned out to be exactly what was needed for this trail. The trail was already broken and the micro spikes enabled me to walk quickly without fear of slipping.
One thing I love about this trail is how beautifully treed it is, especially when outlined with snow. The trail itself is winding with little inclines and declines throughout. There are a few streams to cross along the way that were very easy to handle, as there were rocks or logs to step on. I literally had the words “over the river and through the woods…” going through my mind!
Oh what a payoff! Simply put, I love this view! I love the snow covered trees surrounding the falls with the ice formations along the sides. It’s a much different view then when we did this hike in June 2019.
Rockwell Falls in Hadley, NY.
Our fourth and final waterfall stop of the day was right on the side of the road. We happened to get lucky enough to catch this falls just before it got dark.
